The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has declared an indefinite strike beginning January 2, 2025. This action is in protest against the government’s failure to meet key obligations and implement agreed-upon terms following earlier negotiations. Key grievances include:
- Outstanding Salaries and Allowances:
- Delays in paying a one-month basic salary for year-round work in 2022 to 42 colleges, as directed by the National Labour Commission (NLC).
- Non-payment of the top-up for book and research allowances for 2023, specifically affecting staff at Akrokerri College of Education.
- Breach of Agreements:
- CETAG has accused the government of failing to honor agreements reached on August 19, 2024, which led to the suspension of a previous strike on August 20, 2024. These agreements included addressing the salary and allowance issues, but little progress has been made since then.
- Failed Engagements:
- CETAG highlighted multiple unsuccessful attempts to engage stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), to resolve the issues amicably
The association has warned that unless their demands are fully addressed, the strike will persist, potentially disrupting the academic calendar for the 2024/2025 school year. Colleges of Education are set to reopen on January 13, 2025, for the new academic year, but the ongoing strike could pose challenges to this schedule
